"It was kind of a surprising, surprising event..."

Abel Berumen, an accomplished Mexican-American photographer, woke up blind one day as a result of a rare disease called Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum. This film, made seven years after the unexpected event, reflects on the paradox of his disability: how his loss of vision has enabled him to truly see.

Film Festivals: This film has just been released to festivals.

Screening Note: This film is made about a former graduate student who took my Experimental Filmmaking I class at DePaul University School of Cinematic Arts. After the first two classes, I noticed he didn't look at the screen when I showed films, and asked him about it. He matter-of-factly said, "I'm blind." From there we became fast friends and I stayed in touch with him and made this seven years after we first met. Also, the film's soundtrack score is by the incomparable Gerald Bailey, who I felt incredibly lucky to work with. This film is very special to me.
